...still breathing...

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 7, 2010, 2:18 AM

::News::

Hello everyone,
long time, no see! ;)

I hope 2010 has been treating you well so far. My year started with a lot of work, but that aside, all is well – and I hope you can say the same! :cuddle:

It has been a while since I updated my journal, so this might get a longer entry to catch up on stuff and hear your thoughts about certain things, so beware!

:bulletpurple: Update :bulletpurple:
I know that it still takes me forever to work my way through my comments and your new deviations. I sincerely apologise for that, but I really appreciate all :+fav:s, :+devwatch:s and comments that I receive and I promise that I’ll catch up on you eventually.

:bulletpurple: Art-related :bulletpurple:
Right now, I seem to go through another SciFi artphase... which made me start another KotOR playthrough this weekend. :jedi: It’s always a pleasure to come back to a beloved game after a while, and I fully intend to get back to my planned Worlds of KotOR artwork series soon, with Korriban being my next destination.

These art projects aside, I have rediscovered my love for my long neglected  Neverwinter Nights fanfic Under a Violet Moon, which is posted over at ff.net. www.fanfiction.net/s/5308717/1…

I’ve always been a very slow writer, but have discovered that things run much more smoothly when I work with a voice recorder to get the ideas out of my head, so I hope that I’ll update the story more frequently from now on. I know that many of my watchers write as well, so I'm curious - how does your writing process work?

:bulletpurple: dA Groups :bulletpurple:
This is a topic where I’m really looking forward to hear your thoughts. I have to admit that I really like the new group concept, and that they have implemented many new features that make groups so much better than the old clubs here on dA.

But of course, all these awesome features do not come without a cost. I’m only a member of three groups, but the sheer amount of new group submissions has forced me to turn off the notification for one of them that is very active, and although it truly pains me, I saw no other way to keep up with my message center.

I wondered why that problem never occurred while the groups were still clubs, and I think it’s simply the fact that submitting artworks has gotten so much easier now that people simply enter *everything* without being as selective about the pieces they enter to a group gallery as they used to be in the past.

What are your experiences here? How many groups do you watch, and how do you keep up with the amount of new deviations?

Cheers, and take care!
~Kaana

I'm with you on the groups. I really like them, I really think they were a great idea, except for the fact that the owners don't have total control over submissions except for having to go through each one and approve it. :P

I had to unwatch a couple of the groups I'm a part of. It literally brought the deviations in my already-full message center up by 150! :P I thought I accidentally signed into the wrong account at first.

And the unfortunate thing is, while some of the deviations sent to groups are beyond amazing, a lot are just recolours/retraces of stuff. Especially with anime/manga groups. :(

I work as a moderator in one of my groups now, and we spend indeed a lot of time going through the submissions before we accept them into the gallery.

Luckily enough, we limited the submission rate to one per week per member, to keep the amount of updates in check. It's a shame if one has to leave a group or turn off the notifications, but I for one couldn't handle my message centre in any other way, either. :cuddle:

You're awesome - I'm watching four active groups now, and I can barely manage to catch up. And yes, I'm not dead ... yet. :giggle: But as you can see, I really try to catch up on my messages. I'm really glad that most of my friends here are as patient with me as you are. :tighthug:

Hello! I'll be glad to see your work about Kotor and all! :D (love neverwinter too )

About the group, yes it's difficult to know what can be submited and if we should get a limit of submission by member, in order to not flood the boxes of your member (I talk as an admin here).

As I'm in about 3 groups that are really active, I also understand the problem. Maybe you should just look in the gallery group to see the works that may interst you?

I chose to deactivate some of the notifications for one of my groups, simply because it's really active and lots of new artworks are being uploaded in a very short time, and I'd never be able to catch up on those. :ohnoes:

As for KotOR - well, I'm currently waiting anxiously for the new Dragon Age expansion, and keep myself occupied with creating more DAO fanart. But once that game is played and my skills with both Cinema4D and Zbrush are developing nicely, I have many awesome plans concerning both KotOR and DAO fanart. :w00t:

The DAO fanart will be up some time this week, I think. I actually wanted to create something worthwhile, but somehow Alistair had to take off his shirt again... I'm such a bad fangirl. :giggle:

Hey Susanne

Glad to hear youíre ok, I hope work will cut you some slack soon, I know the feeling and its awful when being over pressured by it. Reflecting on your previous KotOR fanart I can only say that I am looking forward to the new one.

As for Groups, wellÖ I am perhaps the least experienced to give an answer in this part. It has been like two or three weeks since I joined two of them (I think you are a member in one of them too) and so far I canít say that the flow of messages has been overburdening although increased. So far I am feeling happy about it as I get the chance to view various amazing artworks that I would probably have missed in these chaos called Deviantart. As for the differences between groups and clubs as they were I canít really say as you understand but at least in one of the two I am in, people canít post everything as you say. There is a moderator team that reviews the entries and posts only the ones they see fitting.

Have fun finishing off the KotOR piece and take care

Sotiris

Glad to see you're still around - I hope you're well? :tighthug:

I joined one of my favourite groups as a moderator by now, and it's fun. The good thing is that I now get to see many new art pieces without having to accept all the new deviations in my message centre, which keeps things much more organized. :D

As for my KotOR artworks - I'm currently dividing my freetime between creating artworks with Poser just for fun, and with learning new skills in Cinema4D and Zbrush. I have lots of plans for future fanart, containing both KotOR and Dragon Age, so I hope I can live up to my expectations. :D

I noticed you put my little gift on display, Thank you!

Normally when I encounter the writer's block, I just leave it. Sometimes it could take a long time (you might notice I got at least two fanfic in my gallery which hasn't finished at all). But there is really no point squeezing out a bad one when you can't coming up with anything decent.

As for writer's block - you're absolutely right. My writing muse seems to come in waves, so I have very productive months, and then need a break for a month or two before I feel the urge to sit down and write again. ;)

Good to hear from you, and nothing wrong with a Sci-fi phase ;) I have been sort of inactive in regards to art lately, taking some time to enjoy other peoples art.

In regards to the Group System, it is definitely a double edged sword. The interface is for more fluid and effective, but due to the ease of use it promotes a lot more activity. So Groups are forced to either become backlogged or flood peoples message boxes.

What I can say is that as an Admin on Groups, we get all the Submission and Member requests in our inbox, as well as all of the notifications when posted, and we have to process them all. So the Admins definitely understand what everyone is going through.

Different Groups are trying different things to try and counteract this. And the problem is the more well known a Group gets, the bigger the problem becomes.

My suggestion is to turn off Deviation Notifications, and then simply visit the gallery at your leisure. Enjoy them on your own time :)

Oh boy, so much has happened since I posted that journal... I really need to catch up with things more quickly.

Personally, I think the new 1 submission/week works well for Realm-of-Fantasy... and I think it did wonders for the quality of the submissions, too. ;)

Writing process, hmm... To be fair, I too was once a slow writer. To break the habit- and believe me, that can be a challenge- I planned out precisely what each chapter would accomplish. Always have an ending planned for EVERY chapter; it helps immensely

I also found that instead of worrying about how each sentence would turn out, it's better to just write! Get the all of your thoughts written down. You can always go back and add or change details later, but it's important to have the bare bones laid out first. Consider your first draft of a chapter as a sketch, that you can shade and flesh out when you revisit it.

Secondly: don't let ideas fester. Put them on paper (or screen, as it were) as quickly as possible. Again, you can always modify plot or scrap entire scenes later.

Lastly, and most importantly, have somewhere to write. I for one cannot write in the same place that I study, and I get too easily distracted if I'm at my desk at home. This is why coffee houses are typically such wonderful places for writing... aside from the fact that coffee certainly jump-starts the writing process

I hope the suggestions help! Happy writing, dear :D

I usually spend so much time mulling over my story that at one point, I have all the ideas and chapter endings in my head.

But you're right, it always helps to have some markers to work through in every chapter, just to keep on track. I've found out that using the voice recorder for my first draft works wonderfully for me - now I can talk down in 15 minutes what would have taken me several days to write, and after typing that down in an hour or two, I can start building from there on the PC easily.

But it's interesting to see how differently people work. Personally, I need no special place for writing, but certainly prefer to do my voice recording in the kitchen. I wonder why that is?

Well yeah the group system is one of dA's best invention, it's great to have focused groups so more artists with similar interests can view your work and give feedback :)
As the founder of #VuePort, trust me I know the bright and the dark side of groups too :XD: ...it's great to have the opportunity to submit deviations directly to groups, though the downside is that yeah...people are less selective, and we are kinda forced to accept low-quality renders too. It wouldn't be a problem, since our group is open to beginners to learn from advanced users, but when we get 3 low-quali renders that look very similar from the same artist a day, it can get annoying :(. The other things is submitting to the wrong gallery; we spend more time moving submissions to the right gallery than accepting deviations .
The message system is highly affected by groups, yeah, that's why I limited the number of submissions to 3 per day per person when I started the group, but I'm really considering reducing it to 1. Sometimes it feels like a submission contest where quantity overtakes quality :hmm:
But of course I love it
ohh, and thanks for featuring my=iMUDa1, yeah he's talented and learns very fast, he needs some boost ;)
hahhaha sorry I was a bit long :XD: ...thanks for your patience :D

I'm sorry it took me a while to reply, but I hope I'll get better with that one day!

I've decided to become a mod over at #Realm-of-Fantasy in the meantime, and I really like the work, and getting to know more artists in the process. But it certainly paid off for the group to limit the submissions from one per day to one per week - it's a very active group, and I had the feeling that the quality of the art suffered severely because people simply uploaded everything because they could, and we had to decline many works because of that.

But I'm glad that things work well over at VuePort. Do people ever get testy if you refuse an artwork?
